Ancient Agora: The Sacred Triad
Olive Oil, Bread & Wine
- 4 hours
- Private
- For curious minds and curious palates
Here’s what I love about this tour: it starts as a walk through one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world, and ends as the best brunch you’ll have in Athens.
The ancient Athenians built a civilisation on three things: olive oil, bread and wine. This morning we explore where that civilisation was born — and then we sit down and taste it.
We walk through the Ancient Agora, where democracy was practiced, philosophy was argued and the sacred Mediterranean triad fed gods and mortals alike. Every story I tell you here ends at the table. And the table, I promise, is worth the walk.
What will you discover & taste
- The Ancient Agora — the beating heart of Athenian daily life, where citizens debated, traded, prayed and shared meals under the same sky
- The Temple of Hephaestus — the best preserved ancient temple in Greece, still standing exactly where the olive oil merchants once prayed
- The Stoa of Attalos — once filled with bustling shops and lively conversations, this elegant colonnade has been brought back to life and now shelters the Museum of the Ancient Agora.
- Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil — tasted the way it was meant to be tasted, with bread still warm from the oven
- Agiorgitiko, Mouhtaro, Assyrtiko — three extraordinary Greek wines, each one a different expression of the same ancient tradition
- Artisanal cheeses, olives, honey and figs — the sacred pantry of ancient Athens, still very much alive
- Freshly baked breads and rusks — the foundation of every Greek table since antiquity
Ideal for: Food lovers, wine enthusiasts, history lovers, anyone who believes the best way to understand a civilisation is to taste it.
